The institute has been started in 2008 with a desire to educate and train young aspirants to acquire professional competence in the field of optometry. Malabar Institute of Optometry has left an indelible mark in the professional educational realm of Thrissur. It has been the forefront of paramedical education and training. More Than 1000 professional optometrists have already left this institute with wide knowledge and training and are now placed far and wide in different parts of the globe.

As we already have a full-fledged eye hospital the students undergoing studies in this institute will have abundant opportunity to get trained in most of the sophisticated equipment as well as other related matters with ophthalmology.

B.Sc Optometry

Eligibility: Higher secondary with a science group or its equivalent


Optometry is a healthcare profession concerned with the eye and related structure as well as vision, visual system and vision information processing humans. Optometrists are trained to prescribe and fit lenses to improve vision and in some surgical techniques including those for foreign body removal, corneal injury, eyelid and lacrimal disease. Removal of lumps and bumps around the eye and other related structures.


The courses of study offered here are job oriented. It goes without saying that a graduate or postgraduate in optometry will not have to knock at the doors of employers for a job. There are plenty of job opportunities across the spheres of vision care. The optometrist can set up an independent practice and get employed in eye hospitals, clinics and optical outlets in and outside the country. On the basis of the WHO report, it is calculated that around 2 lakh optometrists will be needed in India alone by the year 2020. Efforts are underway to obtain legislative sanction for optometry as a paramedical profession. An optometry Council of India is also expected to come into existence shortly.


Malabar Institute of optometry has followed the semester cum choice based credit system.

For Optometry, the curriculum as the duration of three years (6 semesters) + 1-year Internship.
